Hi, I’m Caleb. I write every now and again in my free time, focusing on themes and ideas that are important to me over characters or little details. Until now my focus has been on writing novels, but I plan to move forward with other mediums in the future.
Having lived on O’ahu my entire life, I try to include some local flavor into my works. Many locations and events are based off of my personal experiences.
For the time being, all of my books are self-made in their entireties, including self-published. I even take and edit the cover photos. I’m sure that they’d turn out better with the help of a professional editor, cover artist, and so on, but I enjoy the books being completely mine.
I believe that elitism and an insistence on following established book-making conventions are horrible for creativity and accessibility. If I didn’t embrace imperfections and accept quirks here and there, I don’t think I would have ever felt confidant enough to have attempted to write a book at all, let alone publish it.
I hope to never fall for the belief that there’s any particular way that a piece of writing should be written. It’s my goal for all of my books to be structured at least a little unconventionally, to demonstrate that it can be done and to inspire more people to just go for it.
Nearly all of the artists who inspire me release new works several times throughout the year, so there’s really no time for them to dwell on the past and stress over what could have been. They stick to their rhythm and move on, not waiting several months before publishing to review and revise their creations, but immediately beginning anew on their next project. That’s the type of approach that I want to take, too.
